Professor Misawa is the Director of Research Institute for Electronic Science at Hokkaido University. He began his academic career as assistant professor at Tsukuba University in 1985, which was after obtaining his Undergraduate Degree (Engineering) at Tokyo Metropolitan University, Postgraduate (Engineering) and Doctoral (Chemistry) Degrees at the University of Tsukuba, and spending a Postdoctoral term at the University of Texas at Dallas. Subsequently, he joined the Micro-photo-conversion project (1988-1993) under the Exploratory Research for Advanced Technology (ERATO) program of Japan Science & Technology Agency, first as a researcher and then the group leader. He then moved in the Department of Engineering at the University of Tokushima as Associate Professor in 1993, becoming full Professor in 1995. In 2003, he moved in Hokkaido University as the Professor at Research Institute for Electronic Science. He had obtained many National and International Recognitions such as Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton International Science Award in 1992, Japanese Photochemistry Association Award for 2005, the Chemical Society of Japan Award for Creative Work in 2006, and was the leader of programs such as Core Research for Evolutional Science and Technology (CREST), New Energy and Industrial Development Organization (NEDO) and Core Research for Industry Creation, and representative of Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Area (MEXT) and Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (S) (MEXT). His current research interests include nanomaterials chemistry, nanotechnology, ultra-fast processes in materials, light-matter interaction, photochemistry, photonic crystals, and plasmonics. He has authored more than 400 research papers. He is also serving as the advisor of many research projects and academic committees, and the deputy editor of the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology C: Photochemistry Reviews (Elsevier).
